I gave a talk at church yesterday- Here it is...

This month we’ve been asked to give our talks about Pioneers. Yesterday we had a fun morning as we celebrated and remembered the pioneers who walked across the plains and settled in Utah. We had a handcart race that some participated in. Brother McKinley in particular was seen giving handcart rides throughout the entire activity. Many of us stood around and watched him as he pulled children around and around, around and around, around and around, around and around, and yet again around the park. We commented on his getting his exercise in for the day and I’m sure many of us were thinking “I’m glad it’s him and not me pulling that cart”

As long and as tedious as it may have been, it was only for a couple of hours. I’m sure he went home and put his feet up and rested for the rest of the day! Our pioneer forefathers who trekked across the plains in their handcarts pulled the handcarts day after day after day. Those pioneers are examples to us of obedience, and faith.

I didn’t know this, but the church has a website dedicated to the pioneer story with 41 different geographical places of significance along the journey. You can click on any of those places and read a few journal entries from pioneers that they recorded at those places. The faith of these pioneers as they journeyed is inspiring to all of us. Through all the tribulations and pain they just kept moving on.

We have had talks this past month about our modern day pioneers . Many of you are pioneers in your family. You are converts who made the choice to investigate, pray and join this church. You walk along a long path similar to the pioneers of years ago as you journeyed from your previous spiritual home to your current spiritual home. Elder Paul B. Pieper Of the Seventy spoke in conference in April of 2007 and said this:

Being a first-generation member of the Church is not always easy. You will walk where no one in your family has walked before. Conditions around you may be challenging. You may have few, or no, friends or relatives to understand and support you. At times you may become discouraged, wondering if it is all worth it. My purpose this morning is to assure you that it is.
And then went on and had this to say:
More importantly, as a first-generation member, you occupy an important place in your family. You are an example to your family of a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Whether they are members of the Church or not, as you live the gospel at home, those around you will feel the Savior’s love through you. They know that you are engaged in something good, even if they do not understand it or have enough faith to accept it. Be patient and kind, pray each day to know how you can serve them, and the Lord will help you and bless you to influence your family for good. By being consistently good and upright, you will establish patterns of faithfulness and righteousness. Those patterns will shape your life, but more importantly, they will become a standard for your family and posterity.
Those of you who converted to the church among us are pioneers and examples to us of obedience and faith as well.

We have all of these great examples of pioneers to look to and learn from. Yet we don’t have to have walked the plains, or be a convert to the church to be a pioneer. We can be a pioneer and make our own journey through our life.

In the April 2007 conference Elder Earl C. Tingey Of the Presidency of the Seventy talked about the recent renovations to the Tabernacle.  He said:

As one foot is planted in the past and the other in the future, I give thanks for pioneer and modern-day prophets and apostles who have had and still have the vision to construct and extend into the future this remarkable building.
He then went on to speak of the accomplishments both President Brigham Young and President Hinkley have done during their time as prophets. They both were pioneers in their days. He defines pioneer as “meaning someone who opens or prepares the way for others to follow”.

By this definition we can all be pioneers. We are the pioneers preparing for the future. We can lay the foundations and prepare ourselves and our children for the future. The same quilities of obedience and faith that we admire in the pioneers, can be found in us as well.

Growing up I remember a Tall Tale story that was circulated widely among the Utah county teens I grew up with.

The story was that after our earthly life we would be in the spirit world and as we stood around talking amongst the people there we would ask them which dispensation and which prophets time did they live. People would answer that they lived during the time of different prophets- Joseph Smith and Brigham Young... essentially that there are a lot of pioneers up there. Then in the story it would end with the story teller being asked when he lived, and his answer was that he lived during the time of President Benson, or Hinkley and that a “hush” fell upon the group realizing someone from that time period was amongst them.

This week as I’ve pondered about what to say today the story keeps coming to my mind... I hesitated to share it, but it kept coming back to my mind. It is a neat “feel good” story, but it isn’t true.

It is true that we were choosen to come to earth in these Latter Days, But I don’t think we can distinguish between the different times and dispensations. Just as we were choosen to come to earth now, they were choosen to come to earth during their time. One time is not greater than another.

As I often tell my children, life isn’t a competition. It’s not about who had it worst, or who did it better. Each of us is given our own trials and tribulations that we individually must use our faith and obedience to our Heavenly Fathers commandments to overcome. I am in awe of the faith and obedience that our pioneer fathers showed. I am in awe of the faith and obedience that I see around me as I observe new converts with their pioneering steps in joining the gosple. I am equally in awe as I see the pioneering efforts of others to bring their families closer to the Lord and strengthen and prepare the way for other to follow them.

In Elder Tingrey’s talk he referrenced a story President Hinkley shared in the october 2003 conference.
President Hinkley said

At the close of one particularly difficult day, I looked up at a portrait of Brigham Young that hangs on my wall. I asked, ‘Brother Brigham, what should we do?’ I thought I saw him smile a little, and then he seemed to say: ‘In my day, I had problems enough of my own. Don’t ask me what to do. This is your watch. Ask the Lord, whose work this really is.’
This is the Lords work. This is his church. We can all be pioneers. We can all follow the examples of our pioneer forefathers of their obedience and faith, and be pioneers in our own lives. We need only to look to the Lord and ask him for our answers.

I know that this is the true church. I have asked and received answers for myself. I have felt the strengthening of my own testimony as through trials I’ve been forced to question and re-ask and receive answers again to strengthen me. I am grateful for the pioneers in my life... for my forfathers who walked across the plains, and for my mom who joined the church as a teenager. I’m grateful for the opportunity I have to be a pioneer with my family. To open and prepare the way for my children and their children in the future.

I have a testimony of faith. Sometimes when we don’t know what to do, who to turn to, or where to go. Sometimes when the path before us looks bleak and dark. If we can just cling to our faith and take one step at a time we can accomplish great things. The handcart companies endured trials and tribulations, but they had to push those handcarts one step at a time. One foot after another, and they traveled an incredible distance. We too can travel a great distance one step at a time with faith in our Heavenly Father, and obedience to his teachings as our guide.

School starts in a month...

And as much as I don't want to get back into the routine of earler mornings, and schedules...

I can't wait.

The kids are definitly showing signs of summer burnout. They have been fighting more often lately and are just generally pushing all the buttons on each other and for mom and dad...

Today we should have a good day though. The 3 older kids are all going and playing at friends houses for a portion of the day and Angela and I will get a little bit of time just to ourselves... (although Angela wishes she were going to a friends house to... we dropped off Alyssa and Angela turned to me and said "now I go to my friends house". We just don't have too many people to choose from that are her age for her to have a playdate without mommy... someother time. I'll run my errands and get things taken care of with only 1 kid with me instead of 4! :)

Then next week I'll have to reciprocate and have all the friends at our house for a big houseparty or something... lol!

5, 10, 15 and 20 years ago...

So... just tell us where you were and what you were doing in your life 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago...

Here's mine!

5 years ago we lived in Texas. I was about the size of a house and waiting for Alyssa to be born (actually we thought at that time she would be Alycia). Alex was just about to start kindergarten, and Ashley was just potty training.

10 years ago we lived in Utah. Rich was working a summer job at BYU setting up a computer "borrowing" program for students. I was working at a Touring company as a logistical manager and visa specialist. This month we moved from Orem down to Provo to an apartment closer to work and school, and one that had air conditioning! (even if it was only a one room conditioning unit!). I was pregnant with Alex but feeling fine (until a month later when I had complications and he was born early).

15 years ago I had just finished my sophmore year in highschool. I had my first job at a grocery store as a checkout clerk, and was having a blast working during the summer and having fun with my friends. I had just gotten my drivers license, so I was happy to have the freedom of being able to drive myself places.

20 years ago I lived in Maryland. I was 11 and getting ready to go into the 6th grade at the middle school. That summer I had my plastic surgery operation on my ears to shape and pin them back (I was born with ears that stuck out, and did not have the normal shape to the upper ear).

Evil Cookies

So yesterday I wanted to make chocolate chip cookies... I haven't made them in a long time, so I did...

And today I'm regretting that I made them because they are too evil for me...

I just like them so much. They are tempting and I'm not even going to mention how many of them I've eaten today. One here, one there... another a few hours later... Rich will read this and ask me how many I ate, and I'll tell him that I don't know... I lost count and didn't keep track and that I only know it was too many!! :)

At least I put half the batch in the freezer so I don't have a whole batch to try to stay away from... just half a batch. (but it is a big batch, so half a batch is still a lot!)

Now I need to figure out what's for dinner...

Chicken something... enchilada's or salsa chicken... hm....or something else... I hate making decisions some days. :)

What I'm doing right now

Hi! I just thought I'd let everyone see what I "get" to do every night....

The girls are supposed to be going to sleep... Obviously they aren't yet having had to get up for yet another drink of water and to brush teeth they forgot to brush...

Back to normal... or what we try to think of as normal... lol!

We had a fun weekend with most of Rich's family here. We went to the Omniplex, and played at the house. Went to church and Ashley's baptism, and played at the house more. I just love to have a house full of people. :) We are so glad everyone was able to come and stay with us and we hope everyone is able to get back to their homes safe today! :)

The cousins had such a great time playing with each other and had so much fun with aunts and uncles and grandparents around... my kids are definitly showing the effects of lots of attention today... because now it's only them and me... and they aren't getting as much attention. lol!

I'll try to get some pictures up soon!

Diagnosis

Tonsillitis... not strep throat at least, but still an infection non the less.

The good news is I'm not contagious, the bad news, is that my throat is so inflammed and my ears are so close to being an ear infection, that I'll be on antibiotics. :( Oh well... sometimes they are necessary. I could wait it out and tough it out probably without the antibiotics, but I want to enjoy my company this weekend and not be laying around unresponsive and in pain the whole time.

Sore throat

My throat is still sore today, in fact it's gone way past sore and hurts a lot! I couldn't sleep this morning because of the pain.

I don't know what wierd thing makes this happen, but I can go over a year without getting sick, but it seems like whenever I do get sick- it's right before we are getting together with Rich's family. :(

I'm headed to the dr this morning to get a throat culture. If it's strep I want to catch it before it get's bad so I don't pass it on to all of Rich's family that's coming to stay with us!

I got comments!! :)

Thank you everyone that commented! :) I'm just a silly giddy girl that people commented! :) I'm not one to talk. I always forget to comment on other people's blogs... hm... maybe if I commented on others more often- they would comment on mine... ya think?

Today my great awesome wonderful friend invited me to drop the kids off at her house for the afternoon, while I got to do some stuff without the help of 8 extra hands! :) I went grocery shopping in about half the amount of time and probably spent 1/3 less than I would have with their help. I got everything put away in a semi organized manner, (dividing up meats from the huge packs I get at Sam's club takes a little while) and swept and mopped my floor!

The kids had fun playing at her house and of course they were little angels over there. They save their cranky side for me at home. :)

I've got a sore throat today, I think I'm going to do a quick version of my favorite white chicken enchilada's... those are creamy and will still taste good with a sore throat. Rich thinks it's probably from my sunburn... I'm dehydrated. So I'm trying to push a lot of water into my body and hopefully it will be a one day thing! I don't want to be sick with most of Rich's family coming to visit this weekend!

Hi again

I'm just popping in for a quick minute.

We have started having a weekly enrichment activity in our ward where we get together at someone's pool for a few hours each week. It's fun, it gets everyone out of the house with the kids and into the nice cool water to play and have some adult interaction for the mommies. So... I have to run to that in a little bit.

I just watched Nashville Star from last night. I'm kind of getting into it, and Ashley likes to sit and watch it with me. :) There is one girl/lady on there that is a mother of 5 boys and just has an AMAZING voice... and another girl that is from a LARGE family... like 14 kids or something... she is just really cute and does a great job with Ballad type songs... and then this one guy that is just a real Country cowboy type sound to his songs... those are the top three and I'm not sure which I like the most out of those three... the other three that are left... can go for all I care. :) They just aren't as good as the other three.

And then the other tv show that I'm following right now is "The Next Food Network Star" There's an LDS gal on there that's cute, but sometimes seems a little too perky. If she can get the right balance of energy and professionalism I think she can win it. If she can't though... she won't. I like her, but there are a few others that are really good that I can see winning it. I don't really have any favorites... but I like the show.

So... I'll put out the question and see if I get any comments..

Are you watching any shows right now that you are really into? Tell me what they are and why you like them. :)

Now I've got 5 minutes to get us all into swimsuits and into the car and off to the pool playgroup. If you are in my ward I hope I see you there!!! :)

Happy 4th of July!!

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

We stayed home and cleaned our carpets, and then loaded everyone into the car and went and did some errands and picked up dinner and brought it home.

And now we have nice clean looking carpets! yeah!

Yesterday we founds some desks for Alex and Ashley. All last year they kept asking us when we would get them desks so they could do their homework in their rooms at a desk... so we found some that looked nice and had a decent price. We went and bought them today and that's Rich's project of the night- putting them together.

I'm sitting here trying to get my thoughts completly straightened out for my Relief Society lesson tomorrow. I'm not having much inspiration, but I know it will come together in the end. :)

Angela fell asleep and had a LATE nap, so I'll be up till midnight with her anyway. There is a Wonderful World of Disney show on ABC tonight, we found out about it by accident, but we're letting the kids stay up and watch that tonight. "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" It looks cute and funny... like a usual Disney Channel made for TV movie.

Well... and that's that... I know- not a very interesting blog entry... but this is my journal, and I figure I should put some boring day to day posts in it... :)

Funny girls

Angela and Alyssa are playing hide and go seek. When it’s her turn to find, Angela runs to the corner and counts... 14,15,16, 20,2,3 ready or not! and then goes and finds Alyssa.

Lazy summer mornings- just rambling here...

I'm just rambling here... random thoughts this morning.

I've definitly been having lazy summer mornings lately. As nice as it is... it really messes up my days. I don't get up and get things done like I need to do. I sleep in, the kids play nicely... it's nice and calm... but- I'm not getting to the Y to exercise, I'm not getting housework done, and I'm not getting the kids to do much more than the minimum stuff each day.

So what do I do to change things?? I don't know. The lazy summer mornings are nice... I can sleep in, and then stay up late with my night owl of a husband... and still get enough sleep :)

I just need to get myself to do some "power cleaning" later in the day or something. :)

Tomorrow is the 4th of July. We aren't really doing anything for it. Our carpets need to be cleaned, so we'll be cleaning the carpets during the day. That night I don't know if we'll go out to see the fireworks or not. We did a few years ago, and the kids complained the whole time while we were waiting, and then it was over in a couple of minutes... the kids were like "that's all??" So... we'll probably just watch the program on the tv. If I had a grill, I'd plan to grill hamburgers and stuff... but I don't have one- maybe next year. :) Perhaps we'll make some cookies or something... we'll see what I get motivated to do.

I think that's the biggest problem with me sleeping in each morning. I really cuts down on my motivation to do things... I'm just like a lazy slug each morning and really there is too much that I should be doing for me to be this lazy each day.

Rich and I without kids!!

In June Rich had a convention in Orlando. I took advantage of the opportunity and flew out and joined him that friday and left the kids at home. The first night we got to stay at the Hilton where he had been for the convention, and then we went and stayed at Disney's Yacht Club hotel. It was really neat! We had a balcony that looked out and I could watch the boardwalk.

Friday night we went to the California Grill Restaurant. It's on the top floor of the Disney's Contemporary Hotel right by the Magic Kingdom. We wanted to get a table by the windows that look out to the Magic Kingdom so we could watch the fireworks over at the park while we were eating, but we didn't realize that while we had reservations for the right time, we needed to get there early to get a table by the window during that time. Oh well... we were put back in the Wine room... kind of funny since we don't drink, but it was quieter and neat. The food was really good and we had a good time. :)

On Saturday we got up and checked out of the Hilton and went and checked in early at the Yacht Club. Then we drove over to Universal Studios and went to Islands of Adventure. I was not thinking at all and wore my new cute sketchers shoes... by the time we had walked from the car to the ticket booths... I already had blisters!!! Dumb choice on my part! So I suffered throught the day with those on. Rich had to slow down and walk slowly for me, but we had a fun time. The Hulk ride is really neat, and the dueling dragons ride was cool! The log ride really really gets you soaking wet and if you somehow didn't get wet on it, the raft ride takes care of any dry spots you have left!

We thought the park would be packed being a Saturday in June, so we had bought the fast pass tickets so we could use those on all the rides. Apparently people don't line up at the opening time as much and sleep in and then go to the Universal parks, so we were able to get through the lines pretty fast in the morning without using the fast pass tickets at all. Later in the day we pulled them out and used them on a few things. It always amazes me at how fast we can get through a park when it's just Rich and I. Everything takes so much longer with all the kids. We had gone on all the rides by 2pm and headed back to the hotel to relax a little while before dinner. That night we went to my favorite restaurant for dinner- Boma... I just love that place. The flavors are just so unique and something that I can't find here in Oklahoma.

On Sunday we went over to Epcot. Epcot is a fun place to go, but it's a lot funner to go without kids. It's neat to walk along the world showcase and see stuff around there, but kids usually don't have the patience and it isn't as interesting for them. While we were there it was HOT, and then it rained... and it cooled off a bit. We went on the new revamped Spaceship Earth ride and that was fun. We went to dinner at the Morroccan restaurant. It had looked interested in the stuff I had read about it, and it wasn't bad, but I don't think we'll go there again. There are too many other restaurants in Epcot that are much better. Then we went back to the hotel to rest for a while (we could just walk from the hotel to Epcot... very cool!) and then came back to watch the night time show and fireworks. Then we went and got dessert at the soda shop at our hotel. It was yummy and fun. There were a couple groups of kids that went and got the "kitchen sink" (a huge bowl of icecream and toppings) and they had races to see which group could eat the whole thing the fastest! lol!

On Monday we drove over to Universal Studios and went there. Again when we first got there it was empty! There were barely any people there and we went through the lines and walked right onto the rides... no waiting at all! We rode the Mummy twice with no wait- just walking right on! The rides and shows were fun... and we had a good time. :) I do have to say though that if you go to the Shrek 3d show... do NOT go to the right side of the "holding tank" (yes that's what it feels like when they cram everyone into a room to wait for the show!) We were in the fast pass line and got into the room first... and went over to the far right like they tell everyone... and then everyone else loaded in after us. WHen they opened the three small doors ON THE LEFT of the room, for people to then flow into the theatre we got stuck over on the right... and didn't get seats! We had to stand in the holding area for another waiting period and then got in to see the show. THey gave fast pass tickets to those of us that were inconvenienced... but it still was annoying... I could rant and rave about how I really really do not like the popular "holding tank" design of the shows and stuff... but I'll save that for another day and post... That night for dinner we went to Yachtsman's Steakhouse at our hotel... high prices, high quality... It was good though even though at times I feel way out of my element- choosing what type of steak to order... I don't know the difference between them! :)

We had a great time and it was so nice to be able to have this little trip with just the two of us. It really gave us time to sit and talk and relax and just have some quiet time together. :)

Day 7- Legoland

Ok... I'm struggling with getting pictures on here at a good quality, so I'm just going to go ahead and write up about our trips and stuff, and the pictures will just have to wait... :)

Southern California Trip- Day 7- Legoland.
We woke up this morning and it was COLD!!! We were sure it would warm up though... we did have long pants we could have the kids wear, and so we dressed them as warmly as we had clothes for. Everyone had a sweatshirt or sweater, except for me. We had our breakfast and headed over to Legoland.

At Legoland while we were waiting for the gates to open, Rich took pity on me and let me wear his sweater. We were all huddled up trying to break the wind so it wouldn't feel so cold.

Finally the park opened and we were off... We rode a little boat ride first that just went around and showed the Lego creations of different places...

Then we rode some other little rides and a rollercoaster. It still wasn't warming up and we went inside and saw a 3D sound and lights show. After that we meet up with Rich's brother Dave and Amanda and then we just spent time riding rides and having fun! All in all it was a fun day.

When the park closed we went back to the hotel and surfed around and found a mexican restaurant near the beach. We drove over there and it was a really neat little place just a couple blocks from the beach. Even with our large group of 10 they were able to seat us within about 15-20 minutes. It was just the right level of noise that I didn't feel like I had to keep the kids really quiet. It was a neat family friendly mexican place. Too bad I can't remember the name of it or I would let everyone know! (Maybe Rich or his mom remember and can put a comment on this post to let us know. :))

After a yummy dinner we went back to the hotel. Everyone came to our room and we stayed up and played some games for a while. Then Alex, Ashley, and Alyssa got to go and spend the night with Dave and Amanda at their hotel and have a slumber party with them. Rich and I only had one child to put to bed! wow!

The next morning we packed up everything, packed the car up and waited for Dave and Amanda to bring the kids back. Then we got into the car and drove... and drove... and drove... Alex got sick and threw up all over himself and the stuff sitting around him. After a few of those he stopped and thankfully no one else got sick! We drove from SanDiego to Albuquerque and then stopped for the night. The next day we drove the rest of the way home and it was nice and uneventful!
