How we perceive things.

Last weekend at General Conference the General Relief Society President- Sister Beck gave a talk. It has become widely debated on whether it was good, or horrible. She focused a lot on motherhood and how LDS women should be the best homemakers. I won't debate the different points she made, but it has given me an opportunity again to see how one message can be "read" differently by different people. I listened to the talk and thought it was fine, there were a few lines that stood out to me, but I didn't realize it would become such a topic of conversation. It has been interesting for me to listen to and read different peoples reactions to her talk.

I went to Institute this morning. After the past two weeks I was really ready to stop going if I could not get Alyssa and Angela to cooperate and play with the other kids over in the nursery while our class was going on. I'm pleased to report that they did great and played with the other kids. I didn't even need to turn on the little DVD player I brought along "just in case" that I had brought last week and hadn't really been much help either. It was very nice to be able to sit and participate in the class with minimal interruptions (the previous two weeks, multiple times I had both of them fighting to sit in my lap and just not cooperating and trying to be quiet at all).

Yes conference was great. :)

Some people just feel like the talk was too "you must be the best homemaker" and are getting defensive about it. I've heard some from people locally, and other complaints from friends that I have on message boards.

I totally didn't get that vibe out of it. I got that we should be the best homemakers- as in making a home of love and peace and doing what we can to nurture. Not you must have a spic and span perfectly clean house 100% of the time and give up yourself and any of your own interests....

But there are a lot of women in the church who did not get that from it and are not too happy about it.
